Developing Reading Fluency Through the Use of Technology (6 - 8)
Much research has been done about the importance of fluency in reading development. In his book The Fluent Reader (2003), Timothy Rasinski cites studies in which the skills of struggling readers were examined and found that reading fluency often lagged far behind other reading skills such as decoding and comprehension. The National Reading Panel has confirmed this finding and notes that reading fluency is a critical but often neglected component of reading instruction (www.nationalreadingpanel.org). Many of the research-proven methods focus on younger children, while older struggling readers need these techniques as well. This lesson uses technology such as music performance/voice recording software, PowerPoint, CD’s, iPods, and/or a teacher web site to develop fluency in struggling readers. Activities such as read-aloud, paired reading, and choral reading are incorporated into the current novel the class is reading, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.
